There are two basic kinds of decisions: those that are arrived at using a specific and well thoughtout process and those that just happen. Although both kinds of decisions contain opportunities and learning experiences, there are definite advantages to using a specific process to make a decision. The most obvious advantage is the reduced level of stress you will experience.
Wise decisions are decisions that are made using a well-defined and practical process. They are based on the values, goals, and perceptions of the decision-maker and include carefully considered alternatives and options. Sometimes, these decisions may or may not follow the expectations of others. While the expectations of others may not consitute the actual outcome of the decision, the advice that is given is usually important or (at the very least) an alarm or trigger to let the decider know he/she should make periodic reassessments of the decision and consider its effects.
Assuming that you define exactly what needs to be decided you need to think about the following:
- Why is this decision important to you?
- Who will be affected by this decision?
- What kinds of values does this decision involve?
- Am I making this decision to satisfy certain feelings or meet certain goals?
- What are the long term effects?
On an obvious note...depending on what kind of decisions we make, it can impact us in a major or minor way. However, sometimes the problem stems from not knowing the magnitude of the decision.
Bad decisions usually stem from those only hearing what they want to hear or seeing what they want to see. Our perceptions work the same way. If we have expectations or biases that we are not aware of, we tend to see what we want to see. Likewise, if someone tries to tell us something we do not want to hear, or find it a pain to listen, we simply tune away. This is a common mistake that many people make. The key is to be aware of your own prejudices and expectations while at the same time staying open to everything that comes your way. This helps to make good decisions....especially major ones.
Ok. I'm done now.
