Mod: Rear Speaker Install

Modification Type:
Appearance/Electronics

Difficulty of Install/Modification:
Very Easy

Preparation And Install Time:
20 mins

This is probably one of the few mods, next to adding a wide mirror or shift knob, that provide mo problem.  So without further adieu, here are the pics.

1.  Buy the speakers.  In my case I bought the highly vaunted Sony XPLODS.  Literally, it's a good bang for the buck.  Just remember to get a 6 1/2" if you want something to fit.

2.  Now hit the rear seats and pry open the speaker covers

3.  Now see speaker.  Right?

4.  Remove foam crap from speaker

5.  Make sure you get all four screws out.  I almost yanked the speaker out thinking there were three.  You might have trouble with one screw.  Just position the screwdriver strategically above the plastic hull to get a good grip on the annoying screw.

6.  Then pull out the old one and carefully pull the wires and leads off.

7.  Grab the XPLODS and attach them on like so.

8.  Forget the cover...you're never going to use it.  Too bad...since they look cool. At least to me.

9.  Screw the new speaker up and you're done.  Below is the comparison of the crap speaker vs. the Xplods.  I love Sony.  They kick ass.

Visible Speakers
By Willard on Saturday, July 10, 2004 (UMST)

It is possible to have your rear and or front speakers visible, and use the neat covers they have.  You could file/dremel the horizontal slats from the cover.  I personally did every other slat for the rear with my Pioneers, and in the front I got rid of them all for my Rockfords.

I personaly suggest doing this! It looks really good when your done!

Front Speakers
By 93Celica on Tuesday, January 31, 2006 (UMST)
I have a 93 ST and my front speakers are 4".  Are the Sony XPlods you put in actually 6 1/2" or was that a typo?  ...Because mine are 5".  By the way, it would make life a lot easier- at least for the screws- if you took that whole rear panel out instead of just the "grill".
