4AFE or 5AFE
Posted: Friday, September 02, 2005 8:17 PM (UMST)
Hey Rad, awesome site, it's great to finallllly find someone else who is doing a 4afe. So here's my deal: I have a 90 ST with a shot 4afe in it. She's not rebuildable, the crank snout is shot and wont hold a keyway for the pulley, plus its just done. I've been looking for replacement engines, and it looks like JDMs are my only option. Now here's the deal: a 4afe from an importer is averaging around $400 plus shipping (under 200 for me). Now, recently, they've been offering 1.5 liter 5afe's for $195 plus shipping of $155 (a quote I got today from some place in LA, not sure if they are reputable). After I told the guy I lived in a non-emissions county (lucky meee) he said that yes, it would work as a drop in. I *should* swap everything over (would that work? top end from a 200k 4afe onto a 5afe? I had my head dipped and cleaned, but..). So what do you think. Stats say the 5afe makes a tad less hp. But all I care about is a runner, I wish she was still as nice as yours, but those days are gone. thanks, Ryan

non-emissions county? I need to go there to get my smog passed over there. . Anyway, I don't know many celica guys who have a 5AFE swapped into their car but I know many people from the club4ag.com boards who have done it and have had positive results. Not too much troubleshooting and great for commuting.

where ru located? if ur in a smog restricted state, i would swap up to a 7afe and then run with an underdrive pulley. the 7afe is a direct drop in and a is a 1.8 rather than a 1.6. it has more hp and torque with no other mods. use all your manifolds an acc from the 4a on the 7a and put it in. No ecu swap ..like putting in a 350 in place of a 305 or a 302 in place of a 289. on forda and chevys. underdrive pulley will give you and additional hp ob between 8-12 hp. if you want to go to a diff engine family like an s series, skip the 5sfe becasue is has 125 hp..the 4afe has 105 the 7afe had 116 the 5sfe had 125.. by the time you take 116 and add thr 18% drag from the pulley ($125) ypou will have 124 hp to 128 hp and you wont have to swap ecus..if u maut go s series go stright to the 3gste wher you can get 185 to 210 hp which is 43 to 82 hp over a 5s or modded 7a and will have tremedous torque. if u had a 5s, the options would be to turbo the 5s with an aftermarket kit, or use 3s components with the 3s brain or do a 3sgte swap..the 5s and 3s turbo interchage easy. the 4a and 7a interchage easy. if u run 5afe that is a 1.5..you will lose hp. they are as cheap as 250 dollars but theyhave less hp than a 4afe even though it is a 5a and not a 4a..do the research. if you are not in a smog state, run 7a with a turbo kit or a s3gte swap. if in a smog state, run a 7a with an underdrive pulley. if you MUST do a 3s do the whole swap and take it to a ref for smog exemption...but remember if you change engine series you have to change the tranny....

hmm you know ive come across this thought many times myself and really if you've got the money and gotta replace that 4afe id really drop a 4age in. Now you could maybe get one of the older ones like out of the 86's as all you trueno fans know or quite possibly could also get a 4agze instead so you've got a supercharger there ta give ya some push ;). In reality though if you got the monies and want somethin that will i should say better fit than droppin a 3sgte in cus i dont know about u but im not goin ta pay a load of money to get the body modified to fit it. Just drop in a 4age silver top from the early 90's AE101 ive seen some of em come 160-180 hp stock. :D

How bad would it be to turbocharge the 4AFE?  Would the torque keep up with the DOHCs, or would it suffer because of the small (1.6L) displacement?

Its not bad to install a turbo on a 4afe. dont forget your 4afe is dohc.It does not apear this way because you hace one cam pulley which is a slave pulley to the other which is under the valve cover. Trust me, Ive done heavy mods to my JDM 4afe when I could have just bought a 4age. Why,- cause im getting pretty good power from my mods. A turbo would be nice.

Hey, I am new here but and have a few questions for you guys. Honestly you have gotten my hopes up, cuz right now I have a 90 corolla alltrac sitting with a dead engine, ever since it swallowed the jacket of a spark plug. So I have been looking at getting another JDM 4A-FE to swap out the long since past hunk of metal. I started to look into the 4A-GE swap, but I found out that being that my babys an alltrac that I can't do so cuz the tranny current is the only one which was made to support the all wheel drive system. So my hopeful ideas of extra power in a swap were blown out of the water. In a month or two I should be able to get the JDM 4AFE. Now I would like to boost the power output, so I wanted to know what you did to you 4AFE and what sort of hp figures you are getting. A list of anything and everything that you put on would be great! Lastly, when I do get the engine, is it worth $2000 to get a turbo kit and is it even possible to turn the girl into a sleeper? Yes I live in a smog controlled city and I don't really have much money to blow! :D Thank you for your time!!!

I've got a 93' Corolla and was wondering how hard it would be to upgrade to the 4age silvertop?? I've heard it was as simple as splicing the wiring harnesses together but wasn't sure if I'd need the ecu and what not as adders to make it run more efficiently.
