4A-FE to 3S-GTE
Posted: Monday, August 01, 2005 8:02 PM (UMST)

Rad,

I just bought a 91 Celica ST with 115k miles on it. I would like to replace the 4A-FE engine with a second gen 3S-GTE engine. I'm new to the celica world and it looks like you have done a lot of research on this, so I was wondering if you could offer any advice (will an ST handle a 3S-GTE engine?). As your engine swap post says, I'm just looking for more power. Thanks in advance.

ad astra!

hey mbrandon12,

The Celica ST chassis can definitely handle the power...the main thing is that it really depends on what transmission you decide to use on the 3S because your current one (which mates to the 4AFE) will not fit. You will have to get a Toyota Solara V6 tranny or a the MR2 Turbo tranny. I prefer the MR2.

There are a couple of things that you need to keep in mind as well. The 3S uses different motor mounts but it isn't that entirely different from the 4AFEs. Basically, if you were to drop the motor into your car...everthing would bolt on except for the passenger side motor mount. There are 4 motor mounts and only 3 would fit (2 below the engine and the driver side). The other thing you need to keep in mind is that there are  different 2nd gen 3S-GTEs. RC (which uses air2water intercooler), Group A (super rare), and the regular air-to-air. You also need to know (if you're in cali) whether you need to smog or not. so getting a US 3S would be the way to go. ..if not...go Japanese and overseas to get your engine a la jarcoinc.com.
